#1. "RE: The other Vs the second" In response to Reply # 0
Dear hishamlubbad,
We use 'the other' to refer to one of two possibilities; I have 2 calculators. I use one at work and the other at home. One of my brothers lives in London. The other lives in Canterbury.
We use 'the second' to refer to one of two or more possibilities; The second point I want to raise in this essay is.... My flat is on the second floor of the building.

Dear Fco,
The article 'the' refers to a particular, known thing. This is why, when there are two possibilities and we have already referred to one of the possibilities, we use 'the' with 'other' - we know which thing it is.
'Another' is created from 'an' and 'other'. The article 'a' or 'an' generally refers to one thing from a group. Grammatically, it is not important which particular thing it is - it is just one example of the group. So, when there are more than two things to talk about, we can use 'another' to refer to one example from the group;
E.g. I've been to many countries and had great experiences in all of them. One country I really liked was Mexico, and another country I really enjoyed visiting was Morocco, but I don't have a favourite. E.g. This is David; he's in my class at school. This is Sue; she's another classmate of mine.
