"the definite article..."


          

Please, tell me which one of theese sentences is correct and why. When do we use the definite article and when we don't?


1) Children from my class ask me. OR
The children from my class ask me,


2) How did you use to study for exams at University. OR
How did you use to study for the exams at University.

3) All the cars in this park belong to people who work here. OR
All the cars in this park belong to the people who work here.

4) She won custody of her child.
She has the right to the custody of her child. (Why is Custody without an article in th first sentence, and in the second with?)

Dear Alex24,

All of your sentences are correct.
The ones without the article are referring to something in general (E.g. I like carrots.) while the ones with the article are referring to a particular thing (e.g. The carrots I had for dinner last night were horrible)

In some sentences, we might be referring to particular examples of the noun, or general examples of the noun, and the difference might not be particularly significant;
The people in Britain drink a lot of tea. (Particular people - the ones who live in Britain)
People in Britain drink a lot of tea. (British people in general)

By the way, 'university' does not have a capital letter unless it is part of the title of a particular university (e.g. Did you go to university? Yes, I went to Cambridge University)
